Technology Certificate Curriculum

The Foreign Language Technology Certificate is a non-degree program offering training in the theories and practices of instructional technologies. The workshops are open to all graduate students, faculty and instructors of the Foreign Languages. ALTEC offers an average of four workshops per semester and a May intensive.

The curriculum of the FLTC places an equal emphasis on the acquisition of instructional design principles (Module One) and the development of technical skills (Module Two). The third module addresses areas of foreign language instruction (including literature and culture) and offers training in the most relevant technologies and design principles (Language Technology Integration Module). Upon completion of the required workshops, students develop a portfolio with assistance from the ALTEC team.

The curriculum of the FLTC comprises an introduction, three modules and a portfolio (click on the image below to view all the workshops included in the certificate).

The workshops usually take place in the ALTEC classroom (Hellems 152), which is equipped with 24 Personal Computers. In order to accommodate the busy schedule of the graduate students and instructors, each workshop is offered twice, at different times of the week. They can either sign-up online or call ALTEC (2-8224). Note that in order to provide as much personal attention as possible to the participants, we keep a student-instructor ratio of 1 to 5, which necessitates the capping of each workshop at 10 participants. Sign-up early!

ALTEC provides the FLTC participants with a number of opportunities to put their newly acquired skills into practice:

  • The workshops are hands-on and project-based.
  • Participants receive an illustrated manual recounting all the activities they completed during the session.*
  • Most hands-on workshops have their own webpage, which provides the table of contents of the session, tutorials and fully developed instructional projects.
  • Within two weeks of each workshop, participants are invited to come back for an optional hands-on practice session where they can work on a project of their own with the assistance of the ALTEC team.
  • ALTEC recently set up two individual development stations (room 152a and 152b) equipped with a computer, a scanner, an internet connection, a firewire, headsets, etc. Participants are welcome to reserve these rooms to work on a project of their own.
  • A workshop can only be waived providing that the student can demonstrate adequate proficiency in the material.
  • Keep in mind that the Certificate is an entry-level non-degree program awarded to those students who completed its requirements. ALTEC will waive a maximum of three workshops. If you are already proficient in instructional technology, then the Certificate is probably not a good option for you; we encourage you to start your portfolio right away instead. Our Foreign Language Technology Specialist is available to help you with this task.
  • All the workshops completed in the past will count towards the newly revamped program.

* You must attend the workshop in order to receive the manual. The learner manuals are the property of ALTEC and are copyrighted.
